June 3-4, 2006 – Lakehead Boat Basin

Posted by Karen A. Brown

Weather was to be light and variable today with winds from the south, so naturally we took advantage of the 10 knot Northeast breezes and for a sweet run down to Duluth. The sun was shining too and it kept us warm under a clear blue sky. The run down was uneventful and we rest now against a transients dock. There is a sweet surge that’s rocking us just right.

After docking we walked to Red Lobster where Troy cussed out some King Crab as an Alaskan son of a whore. We followed dinner with the perusal of some shops where we found some chocolate ore boats and cheese from round the world. Round it off with an ice cream cone and a good look at the lake and I’d call this a mighty fine day.

Sunday, June 4 saw us waking to sunshine and wind coming from – you guessed it, Knife River Marina. We were woken by the sound of a horn signaling to the bridge for a lift. What a completely different sound to wake up to then what we’re used to. We also got some good photos of the Algo Central coming in the previous night. We had to switch to a smaller lens it was so close.

On our return trip we had great wind. We were close hulled the entire way, but were able to make it in just three tacks even though the wind began to come more easterly as we neared Wisconsin.

We also learned that we really need to put plugs in our sinks when we’re under way. In the forward head, the water pops up the sink and splashes the mirror when the waves hit the thru-hull the right way (which explains to me the water spots that I’m constantly seeing on the mirror and seem to appear out of nowhere).

The other thing we learned is that the galley sinks will backfill, float any dishes in it and begin to spill over the side and drop into the trash bag. This is also conveniently enough, the degree of heel in which it is difficult to climb the stairs, especially if on the tack that doesn’t give you the wall to lean against.

All in all, I’d say it was a very good sail.
