- Thomas
Friant
(1923). The tug, Thomas Friant, sprang a leak after being struck by
ice and foundered 12 miles from Two Harbors, Minnesota. She was on a
voyage to Bayfield, WI. No lives lost. Interestingly, in December 1908
she had burned to the waterline during winter layup at Sault St. Marie.
In May of 1911 she was redocumented as a gill net fish tug.
January 15

Dredge #1 (1956).
A wood dredge, she sank from a leak.
January 21
- Harry
L. Allen
(1978). Burned when Multifoods Elevator #4 in Duluth harbor burned.
Vessel sustained serious damage and was sold for scrap.
January 27
- R.W.
Currie
(1919). Abandoned, St. Louis County, Duluth, Minnesota.
January 28
- E.P.
Ferry
(1900). Burned to a total loss at her winter moorings, Duluth, Minnesota.
