December 1

  • Maplehurt (1922). Driven ashore 60' west of the west breakwater, 1400' south of Portage Ship Canal. 11 lives lost.

December 2

  • International (1913). Burned, White City, Michigan.

December 6

  • Chippewa (1847). Sunk off Eagle River.

December 7

  • Kamloops (1927). Foundered off Isle Royale with all hands. Twenty lives lost.
  • Mary Corgan (1891). Foundered, Bayfield Wisconsin.
  • Pearl B. Campbell (1895). She struck a reef and sank. She was a fish tug which had been chartered as a temporary cargo carrier and was bound for Madeline Isl.. Went down in 200 ft. of water. Foundered with all hands.

December 8

  • Altadoc (1927). After parting wheel chains in a blizzard, she was stranded off Keweenaw Point. Her crew was rescued by USCG CRAWFORD on 12/11/1927.
  • Frank Perew (1891). Foundered fifteen miles off Whitefish Point. Six crew lost from a crew of seven.

December 10

  • Monarch (1906). Lost in a blizzard, she drove her prow up into the woods of Blake Point, Isle Royale.

December 12

  • Amethyst (1879). Ran ashore after attempting to salvage the fishing tug SISKIWIT, Duluth, Minnesota. Capt. Wheeler beached her saving 10 of the 11 lives aboard.
  • DeSoto (1869). Stranded and ashore at Marquette, Michigan.
  • Kakabeka (1895). Broke her mooring lines during winter layup at Silver Islet, sent aground on Sand Island, Michigan and broke apart.
  • Sisikiwit (1879). Damaged in tow of tug AMETHYST when she began to founder. Crew transferred to AMETHYST. One life lost.
  • Stranger of Superior (1875). Lost ability to manuever and had no anchors, she blew out to sea off Grand Marais, Michigan. Never seen again.

December 14

  • Mary Ann Hulbert (1883). In tow of steamer KINCARDINE she was overwhelmed and foundered in a heavy gale off St. Ignace Island, forty miles northeast of Thunder Bay. She had been bound for Michipicoten Island from Port Arthur, Ontario.

December 15

  • Reliance (1922). Bound Puckasaw, Ont., for the Soo, she grounded in a storm on Lizard Island, Ontario. The crew and passengers endured a gale and temperatures as low as -18 before rescue. Still, four died of exposure.

December 16

  • Adventurer (1906). Broke her moorings and went adrift in gale near Ontonogan Michigan. Driven on rocky shore and pounded to pieces. No one was aboard at the time.

December 18

  • Whaleback Barge #115 (1899). Foundered near Terrence Bay, Ontario.

December 23

  • Mary Martini (1885). Stranded, Brule Point, 13 miles from Grand Marais, Michigan.
